In an attempt to widen my artistic and literary world-view, I’ve begun a virtual (online) and physical (books) trek to find poets and writers who have gone before us in literary expression and shared their wide-eyed personal truths, conveying their individual messages, their own life- processing, and their unique passions. I am participating, as many of you are, in a cultural and metaphorical wool-gathering of phrases, images, and spaces of being, combing through the softness of them, as well as picking out the gnarly threads of thought that serve to tell harder truths. If you click on the link above, you will see a fairly representative list; at least, it looks like a great starting place, at least for me, for now. My initial touchpoint was to explore more about Wislawa Szymborska, who was a Polish poet I’d like to get to know. When searching for female European poets, this list came up.
Ready to walk at a steady, life-long pace…
nice list for starters
thanks very much! do you have an all-time favorite?
all time poetry favorites? Hmmmm. Akhmatova and Mandelstam rank high. Pessoa, Rilke, William Bronk, Neruda, Lorca. Edmond Jabes and Wallace Stevens have to be very high. Larry Levis. of course William Stafford. I’ll check my shelves for those who occupy most of a shelf…good indicator 🙂
I will have to compile my “Nathan’s Poets” list. I will await your extended list of recommendations via shelf inventory! Awesome!!
